The Ethicon Harmonic Blue hand piece is the reusable ultrasonic transducer that drives Harmonic cutting and coagulating instruments. It converts generator output into mechanical vibration that seals and divides tissue without electrical current passing through the patient.

Ultrasonic surgical handpieces contain a piezoelectric transducer that vibrates the connected blade at ultrasonic frequency, generating friction that denatures protein to seal vessels and cut tissue at lower temperatures than electrosurgery. The hand piece connects to a compatible generator and attaches to single-use or reusable shears and blades. Because the effect is mechanical rather than electrical, there is no return electrode and no current path through the patient.
